Artist Maker: Pamela See butterfly witches hat

Border Crossing responds to the materiality of the witches hats used in Constructing Landscapes: urban visions exhibition at Caloundra Regional Gallery. On the 26 March 2020, the border between Queensland and New South Wales was closed in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. The butterfly cutout and placed on the ground is symbolic of the death to human migration. Its patterns were appropriated from the monarch butterfly. The species colonised the Asia Pacific during the nineteenth century. The introduction of milkweed, by gold prospectors, enable the butterflies to proliferate in Australia.
