Conditions of Entry

Sponsored in 2020 by the Friends, Regional Gallery Inc., and supported by the Sunshine Coast Council and Caloundra Regional Gallery, the Local Artists - Local Content Student Award 2021 will be held in March – May 2021 in the Artroom at the Caloundra Regional Gallery. School students are encouraged to participate in this exciting opportunity by entering an artwork that celebrates their local region.

A total prize pool of $1,500 has been generously donated by the Friends, Regional Gallery, Caloundra Inc. Art supplies vouchers will be awarded across a range of categories to winning entrants and their schools.

Thirty finalists will be displayed in the Artroom at the Caloundra Regional Gallery, held in conjunction with the prestigious annual Local Artists - Local Content Art Award 2021 exhibition shown in Caloundra Regional Gallery.

Key dates

  • Entries open: Tuesday 6 October
  • Entries close: Tuesday 1 December
  • Finalists announced: early February 2021
  • The winners will be announced on Saturday 20 March 2021 at 2pm
  • Exhibition dates: Friday 19 March 2021 – Sunday 2 May 2021
  • Submission dates: Artworks and completed entry forms are to be delivered to Caloundra Regional Gallery on Wednesday 2 – Friday 4 December 2020 between the hours of 10am – 4pm
  • Return of finalists’ artworks: Collect from Caloundra Regional Gallery from Wednesday 5 – Friday 7 May 2021 between the hours of 10am to 4pm

How to Enter

There is no entry fee. To be considered for selection, entrants must comply with all entry instructions and conditions. Ensure your artwork does no exceed the maximum size requirements.

Provide your completed entry form along with the artwork to Caloundra Regional Gallery between Wednesday 2 December – Friday 4 December. Opening hours are 10am – 4pm.
Maximum 1 entry per student.

Eligibility

The Local Artists – Local Content Student Award 2021 is open to school-aged children from within the Sunshine Coast and Noosa Council regions that are 18 years and under at the time of entry.*

There are three categories:

8 years and under

  • Individual winner: $200 art supplies voucher
  • School of winner entry: $200 art supplies voucher
  • Highly commended: $50 art supplies voucher

9–13 years

  • Individual winner: $200 art supplies voucher
  • School of winner entry: $200 art supplies voucher
  • Highly commended: $50 art supplies voucher

14–18 years

  • Individual winner: $200 art supplies voucher
  • School of winner entry: $200 art supplies voucher
  • Highly commended: $50 art supplies voucher

Judges encouragement award: $150 art supplies voucher.

*Eligible Schools include: Private School, State School, Independent School, Home School group.

The Artwork

  • Must be on paper (NOT board).
  • Must be unmounted and unframed.
  • Paper must be no smaller than A4 (210 × 297 mm) and no larger than A3 (420 × 297 mm).
  • Can be either horizontal or vertical.
  • Any art materials may be used (eg: paint, pencil, pastels, collage, etc.) but the artwork must be two-dimensional.
  • Must be a depiction of something about the Sunshine Coast region/area.
  • Must be original and not infringe the copyright, moral rights or other rights of any third party.
  • Must be recent work, created in 2020.
  • Must be original work and not a copy of the original work.

Preparing the entry

  • Clearly label the back of the artwork: name, age, address and contact details. Make sure this doesn’t show through to the front.
  • Do not roll or fold the artwork. It is suggested the artwork be placed between two pieces of A3 cardboard for delivery to protect it and keep it flat.
  • The work must be accompanied by a printout of the completed entry form.
  • Delivery must be made in person. Deliveries will not be accepted via Australia Post.
  • Deliver entries to: Caloundra Regional Gallery, 22 Omrah Avenue, Caloundra (opposite Caloundra Library) on Wednesday 2, Thursday 3 or Friday 4 December 2020 between 10 am and 4 pm. Entries will only be accepted during the specified delivery period.

Selection of Finalists

  • A maximum of 30 finalists, 10 from each of the three categories, will be selected for the exhibition in the Artroom at the Caloundra Regional Gallery, by a Selection Panel chosen by Friends of the Caloundra Regional Gallery and Sunshine Coast Council.
  • The Selection Panel’s decision is final and no further correspondence shall be entered into.
  • The finalists will be advised as per Key Dates. 

Judging

  • The Judge is Nina Shadforth, Collections Curator, Caloundra Regional Gallery. The Judge’s decision will be final and no subsequent discussion will be entered into.
  • Three winning entries for The Inaugural Local Artists – Local Content Student Award 2020 (one representing each category) will be selected by the independent judge from the finalists.
  • Prize winners and their schools will be notified prior to the official opening.

Prizes

No cash prizes will be given but $1,500 in prize vouchers for art supplies will be awarded courtesy of the Friends, Regional Gallery, Caloundra Inc.

The Schools of the three winning entries will be awarded a prize voucher to the value of $200 for each age category. In the case of there being no direct School associated with the winning entry of a school aged child, the awarding of the School prize will be at the discretion of the Friends, Regional Gallery, Caloundra Inc., Caloundra Regional Gallery and Sunshine Coast Council.

Exhibiting the artwork

  • Sunshine Coast Council and Caloundra Regional Gallery reserves the right to determine the most appropriate method for displaying works and to refuse to display of any works deemed inappropriate or unsafe.
  • All students grant Sunshine Coast Council permission to display the work in the Artroom at the Caloundra Regional Gallery (see Key Dates).
  • All artworks must remain on display until after the exhibition finishes on 2 May 2021. The display will be open to the public from Friday 19 March 2021.
  • Collecting the artwork – work will be available to be picked up from the Caloundra Regional Gallery from Wednesday 5 – Friday 7 May 2021 (see Key Dates).
  • Students/Schools are responsible for organising the collection of their work during the time period specified (see Key Dates).
  • There will be no returns by Australia Post.
  • Sunshine Coast Council will not pay for any costs incurred in the collection or transfer of artwork entries.
  • Any artworks not collected by 4pm Friday 7 May 2021 from the Caloundra Regional Gallery become the property of Sunshine Coast Council and will be disposed of as they deem suitable.

Care and Responsibility

Sunshine Coast Council will exercise all reasonable care with the artworks submitted for Local Artists - Local Content Student Award 2021. However, it does not insure them against damage or theft, this is the responsibility of the artist.

Copyright

The student must be the sole author and owner of the copyright of all artwork entered.

The Sunshine Coast Council, Caloundra Regional Gallery and Friends, Regional Gallery, Caloundra Inc. reserve the right to photograph/scan all artworks entered in the Local Artists -samant Local Content Student Award 2021 for the purpose of documentation and promotion. The winners grant a non-exclusive licence to Sunshine Coast Council, Caloundra Regional Gallery and Friends, Regional Gallery, Caloundra Inc., to reproduce the work either in full or in detail, in material form, to photograph, publish and/or communicate it to the public for prize-related purposes and anything incidental to such purposes. This licence includes marketing, publicity, educational and publication uses for the gallery, the prize and its exhibition in all media, including—but not limited to—electronic/digital, broadcasting and print media, in perpetuity.

Interpretation of Rules

In the event of a dispute regarding the interpretation of the rules and conditions, the decision of Sunshine Coast Council shall be binding on all parties.
