Artist Statement

This painting depicts Kabi Kabi Elder Aunty Beverly Hand with her ever present companion Fella. It seeks to capture her deep cultural and spiritual connection to the ancient Bunya in the background which likely well predates colonisation. Bev is Elder in Residence at the Sunshine Coast University and organiser of Bunya Dreaming, an annual celebration of the significance of the Bunya pine (Araucaria bidwillii) in First Nations Culture. Bunya dreaming provides a forum for connection to Culture, Country and reconciliation.

Sunshine Coast Council acknowledges the Sunshine Coast Country, home of the Kabi Kabi peoples and the Jinibara peoples, the Traditional Custodians, whose lands and waters we all now share.
We commit to working in partnership with the Traditional Custodians and the broader First Nations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) community to support self-determination through economic and community development.
