Artist Statement

As a break from my sculptural practice where I had completed 3 exhibitions of mainly sculptural works over the past 6 months I started to experiment with some figurative paintings. Recently I was fortunate to attend the African Art Fair in Cape Town and also view the exhibition ‘When We See Us’ – A Century of Black Figuration in Painting at the Zeitz MOCAA in Capetown  documenting people going about their lives was fresh in my mind.

Fresh from my African trip on a visit to Rusty’s Markets over Easter I came across this colourful character and was struck by the colour in his outfit and started on the canvas that same night. It may be the first of a new body of work documenting people in Cairns in their weekly ritual of shopping at Rusty’s Market.
