LANDscans - Digital Frottage: Intimate Encounters with Place
Nicole Voevodin-Cash | 16 Oct - 16 Dec 2026 | Caloundra Library+ Artspace
As an extension of Nicole Voevodin-Cash’s Mapping Threads, discover LANDscans in Caloundra Library+, a captivating exhibition that transforms touch, texture and movement into intimate digital portraits of people and places, inviting viewers to experience landscape and belonging in entirely new ways.
LANDscans emerge from a tactile, exploratory process in which a handheld scanner becomes an extension of the artist’s hand. Moving across surfaces, the scanner records fragments of texture, colour, residue and detail, translating physical encounters into digital images.
Voevodin-Cash thinks of this process as digital frottage: an impression of place made through direct contact, movement and touch. Each scan is shaped by both intention and accident. Uneven movements, unexpected distortions and the digital residue she calls “digital dirt” become part of the image, preserving traces of the encounter that might otherwise remain unseen.
Rather than depicting a landscape from a distance, these works draw the viewer into intimate micro-environments. Natural and manufactured surfaces, growth and decay, human occupation and the passing of time are recorded as fragments of lived experience.
LANDscans asks the viewer to reconsider what constitutes a landscape, and whether seeing is ever purely visual. The experience of place is also shaped by memory, touch, sensation and mood.
These images are not neutral records of a location, but encounters between a place and the person moving through it: intimate portraits of environments, carrying the marks of both.
