Late last year we realised our regional heritage collections were missing objects, stories and memorabilia that told the story of our rich water sport history.
Landsborough Museum put the call out and it was answered by so many clubs and individuals who had been involved and instrumental in aquatic sport in the region.
The result is a great collection of objects and stories for our Grassroots to Glory exhibition
We’ve received boats from the 60s, swim hats from the 40s, stop watches and medals owned by Olympic medallists, even tales from an enterprising 92-year old lifesaver who helped re-build the surf lifesaving club at Coolum in 1947.
The Grassroots to Glory annual exhibition and accompanying digital story will focus on local sporting history, in the lead up to the 2032 Olympics.
Each year will focus on a specific area of sport, collecting objects and stories from across the Sunshine Coast region. From grassroots sporting events to professional competitions, social sport to elite athletes, every aspect of sport on the Sunshine Coast will be celebrated.
