Meet the artisan: Melinda Hall, TOOTZZI

TOOTZZI is a contemporary accessories label based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Founder, designer and maker, Melinda Hall, produces fashion accessories with the intent and primary focus to create something "not" so everyday.

Each piece is uniquely designed and handcrafted by this one-woman-show, where no two pieces are the same. Her accessories are predominantly made from polymer clay but incorporate other mediums. These include dried flora and repurposed metal, fabric and leather. Melinda has created works other than statement jewellery, including ornaments, wall hangings, vessels and indoor garden concepts.

Melinda's techniques are experimental and self-taught. She utilizes ordinary items as her clay tools, which add texture and abstract detail to her work. Melinda has been commissioned to produce surface design work with her clay slab technique. And she is recognised for the use of her "out of the ordinary" colour and texture compositions.

"As a child, I was surrounded by art and creativity. My mother is a full time ceramicist, so I lived and breathed it. It was only natural that I would embark on my own creative journey.

I originally launched TOOTZZI in 2010, before starting a family. Once my sons arrived, my ‘creative baby’ was put on hold. But soon enough I was itching for a creative outlet. I relaunched my label in 2016 and have been working on it ever since.

I make small batch fashion accessories and quirky decorative wares. Engaging with other makers and lovers of the handmade is the fuel that drives my creative pursuits. You will find TOOTZZI in various boutiques around the country, as well as artisan markets." - Melinda Hall, TOOTZZI
