Third Drawer Down x Kait James
Third Drawer Down collaborated with Kait James to create a range of products featuring her artworks
Kait is a proud Wadawurrung woman, whose work explores her identity as an Australian with both Anglo and Indigenous heritage. Her work asks questions relating to identity, perception and our knowledge of Australia’s Indigenous communities. Third Drawer Down collaborated with Kait to create a range of products featuring her artworks.
Kait uses found materials, such as Aboriginal souvenir tea towels from the 70's and 80's. She alters these with textile techniques like embroidery, fabric collage and punch needling. Through this intervention, Kait subverts stereotypical colonial imagery in favour of a contemporary perspective on Indigenous culture. She employs colour, language and pop-culture references to reclaim the narrative with humour and wit. Her work delivers a powerful political message with a kitsch aesthetic.
Kait James tea towels, tote bags, magnets and key rings are available for sale in the Gallery Store. Come in and browse the Third Drawer Down range, which also features collaborations with two other First Nations artists, Tony Albert and Kaylene Whiskey.
