Japanese-inspired crafts
Contemporary interpretations of traditional Japanese techniques
This autumn in the gallery store, we’re showcasing two artisans working with traditional Japanese techniques in contemporary ways.
Jan Roebuck’s ceramics are a community favourite, made with exquisitely fine porcelain. She uses the Japanese pottery technique of Nerikomi - building patterns into the ceramic with coloured clay. The pieces of clay are stacked and then sliced through to reveal intricate patterns.
Jan’s latest range of ceramic homewares sports a subtle merging of rainbow colours and patterns - a contemporary take on the traditional Nerikomi aesthetic. While her pieces look delicate, they are sturdy enough for everyday use. From mugs to plates, trinket bowls and vases, we have the perfect object to add beauty to your home. We also offer a range of Jan’s jewellery in-store, a wonderful way to incorporate wearable art into your life.
If you’re a jewellery afficionado, you’ll love our newest artisan - Nicole Voevodin-Cash. She creates with upcycled mesh and beads, turning humble materials into contemporary jewellery. Her secret? A Shibori binding technique that shapes the mesh, holding the colourful beads in place.
Nicole’s necklaces and bracelets are both aesthetic and tactile, with a satisfying bounce to their form. They are light too, for those who don’t like to feel weighed down by their accessories. Available in a range of tones and lengths, every piece makes a unique statement.
Both artisans are also practicing artists based on the Sunshine Coast. You can see their works in the current Local Contemporary Art Prize 2025 exhibition, displaying further examples of their shibori and ceramic wonders. The prize continues until 8 June, so pop in to see it while you still have the chance.
Caloundra Regional Gallery is located in Felicity Park, just off Bulcock Street. We’re open Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, and Saturday to Sunday, 10am to 2pm
