Pop-up artist: Mieke van den Berg

Mieke van den Berg is a muralist and contemporary artist based on the Sunshine Coast. She specialises in murals, installations and sculptures that transform spaces into immersive experiences. Over the past 30 years, her work has brought colour, movement and life to homes, schools, cafés and public spaces across Queensland and internationally.

For her series, Wall Stories, Mieke explored the abandoned SuperBee honey factory in Tanawha. She preserved physical pieces of this iconic Sunshine Coast site in sculptural form, sharing this important local history through art.

"Since 1968, the SuperBee site has been a hub of human activity, serving as both a honey factory and a tourist attraction. The business was sold 15 years ago and the property has remained vacant since then. Wall Stories captures and preserves the various human interactions with the SuperBee buildings, as well as the ongoing destruction of the site.

I have stored the memories witnessed by its walls, like a library, presenting them as time capsules... Ironically, these sculptures are the only physical remnants of previous activity at SuperBee, as the building burned down in 2020. Recently, the final traces were erased to make way for a new property development."

The Wall Stories sculptures are available for sale and a signed print of the sculpture in its original setting is included with each piece. Mieke also has individual prints, cards and jewellery available for purchase.

You can visit the pop-up during gallery open hours: Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, weekends, 10am to 2pm. The pop-up continues until 22 March, alongside current exhibition The Brothers Gruchy.
