Sunshine Coast stories
From the mountains to the sea, we celebrate local stories
We have so many wonderful makers right here on the Sunshine Coast, with stories to tell about local life, culture and nature. This summer, we are featuring some of their creations in the Gallery Store.
Photographer Christine Hall has just released The Studio Project. This book is the culmination of many years spent photographing the vibrant artistic community here on the Sunshine Coast. The pages are filled with intimate portraits of artists at work in their studios. The Studio Project makes the perfect coffee table book and memento of your time on the Sunshine Coast.
We have books for the little ones in your life too. Local First Nations artist, Jandamarra Cadd (Yorta Yorta/Dja Dja Warung), has illustrated a series of books in his signature colourful style. Listen and We Are Australians, written by Duncan Smith OAM (Wiradjuri) and Nicole Godwin, teach children from all backgrounds about First Nations culture and history. The beauty of the illustrations will keep you and the kids returning to these books, time and time again.
To compliment the theme of current exhibition, Nature and Culture, we are also featuring books illustrated by Heather Gall. Heather is a local artist known for her sensitive depictions of the landscapes and wildlife of the Sunshine Coast. Koala Number One, Platypus Deep and Frog Thunder, written by Jill Morris and illustrated by Heather, will entertain children while helping them to appreciate the wonder of our native animals.
Stories come in many forms, and First Nations artisan Amanda Pitt-Lythgoe (Kabi Kabi/Wakka Wakka) imbues each of her creations with cultural stories. Her range of earrings and textiles, handmade on Country, are new to the gallery store and already popular. From pippi shells and bunya nuts to sea turtles, each design shares her important stories about Country and the natural beauty of the Sunshine Coast.
If you would like to remember your special connection to the Sunshine Coast, the Gallery Store has something for you. We celebrate our local artists and artisans, and the stories that make this place unique.
Drop by to browse the Gallery Store, open during gallery hours: Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, and Saturday to Sunday, 10am to 2pm.
