Artist Statement

A surfing figure masterfully plays within the elusive boundary between land and sea. Using his body, he rides a solid yet intangible space between two physical states. The thresholds between land and sea, childhood and adulthood and earthly / spiritual experiences are a constant engagement for me and my work.

My methodology enables me to draw in the viewer to a private meditation with the subject. The carved engrained surface holds a tangible tension, like that of water and skin. That surface is an integral platform for the image to perform in an inky limbo. Placing the figure within a sensual and ethereal landscape.

Sunshine Coast Council acknowledges the Sunshine Coast Country, home of the Kabi Kabi peoples and the Jinibara peoples, the Traditional Custodians, whose lands and waters we all now share.
We commit to working in partnership with the Traditional Custodians and the broader First Nations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) community to support self-determination through economic and community development.
